Love of the Game
By: Kraelynn
As a child I wasn't your typical girl. I loved to be rough
and get dirty with the boys. Out of Five kids I was the only
girl, so I had to hold my own. Around the age of six I found
my passion for sports and love for basketball. In elementary
school I played peewee basketball for the community team from
First grade to Fifth grade, and I really loved it. The best
part about pee wee basketball was I got to play with girls and
boys. I also made a lot of friends outside of school, who like
the same thing as me. And finally the best part was that my
step dad was the coach. Pee wee basketball means so much to me
now that I’m older because it gives me my first senses
of how a team should be like a family. Throughout my
childhood, while playing basketball I also participated in
other sports like soccer, soft ball and volleyball but it
seemed that basketball always had my heart.
In high school, I continued to play basketball. My ninth grade
year, I feel that I made a lot of improvement skill wise.
Which allowed me to move up throughout the program. At the end
of my ninth grade season I got the worst news any athlete
would want to hear. I was injured and I didn't even know.
At my last physical, my doctor stated that I had a severe case
of scoliosis. Having scoliosis meant that I had to undergo
surgery. I had my surgery the summer prior to my sophomore
season, which meant there was no way I was going to be able to
play that year. My tenth grade year had to be the most
challenging because I was recovering and I also had to miss
out on what made me happiest the most. But through that time I
gained a new love for teaching the sport just as much as
playing. During my off season I was able to assist and travel
with the team. I feel that I gained more knowledge watching,
which I feel prepared me mentally for the next two seasons.
My eleventh and twelfth grade year was very important to me
because of college. I knew that I wanted to play sports but I
also knew that I couldn't play it long and at a high
level because of my injury. Finishing out my last year of
school I got offers to play at several instate schools but
after consulting my parents and doctors the decision of
playing much longer left my heart broken. After graduating I
went to the local community college and played one last year
of basketball and enjoyed every moment of it. Now that I am in
my second year of college I don’t plan on playing
basketball any more but I see a new path forming in my life. I
am becoming more intrigued with the sports world as far as
coaching, training and athletic directing. Although that
feeling of being on the court isn't there anymore I
don’t think I will ever lose the love of the game.

This is a well written piece. It's very organized and the ideas flow from year to year as the subject matures and learns her lessons. There are a few grammatical mistakes, a few spelling blunders, but overall this is a very enlightening, enjoyable work.
